چکیده

A two-stage formal approach to hydrological model conceptualization is described. The approach requires the definition of hydrological variables in terms of states and rates, the construction of state-rate diagrams and the definition of equations for the rates based on an indepth understanding of the related hydrological processes. It is inferred that the approach can help modellers arrive at models which are conceptually more feasible for operational use and for theoretical studies. STELLA, a programme specifically designed to facilitate model conceptualization using this approach, is also briefly described. The use of the two stage formal approach with STELLA will be an excellent teaching tool for hydrological modelling.

Parameterization of a Hydrological Model for a Large, Ungauged Urban Catchment

Urbanization leads to the replacement of natural areas by impervious surfaces and affects the catchment hydrological cycle with adverse environmental impacts. Low impact development tools (LID) that mimic hydrological processes of natural areas have been developed and applied to mitigate these impacts. Hydrological simulations are one possibility to evaluate the LID performance but the associat...

Gauging the ungauged basin: a top-down approach in a large semiarid watershed in China

A major research challenge in ungauged basins is to quickly assess the dominant hydrological processes of watersheds. In this paper we present a top-down approach from first field reconnaissance to perceptual model development, model conceptualization, evaluation, rejection and eventually, to a more substantial field campaign to build upon the initial modeling. This approach led us from an init...

Hammerstein-Wiener Model: A New Approach to the Estimation of Formal Neural Information

A new approach is introduced to estimate the formal information of neurons. Formal Information, mainly discusses about the aspects of the response that is related to the stimulus. Estimation is based on introducing a mathematical nonlinear model with Hammerstein-Wiener system estimator. This method of system identification consists of three blocks to completely describe the nonlinearity of inp...

Formal-Driven Conceptualization and Prototyping of Hypermedia Applications

In this paper we present an approach that covers the conceptualization and prototyping phases of hypermedia applications development. This approach is based on a formal model, Pipe, adequate to characterize present hypermedia applications. Pipe is used to demonstrate the conceptualization and prototyping phases of the Fraternali/Ginige-Lowe process model, providing a new process model called Pl...

Developing Reliable yet Flexible Software through If-Then Model Transformation Rules

Developing reliable yet flexible software is a hard problem. Although modeling methods enjoy a lot of advantages, the exclusive use of just one of them, in many cases, may not guarantee the development of reliable and flexible software. Formal modeling methods ensure reliability because they use a rigorous approach to software development. However, lack of knowledge and high cost practically fo...
